It is considered that because of menthol cigarettes it is easier to start smoking and much difficult to quit.
In USA smokes about each fifth adult person - exactly the same situation was ten years ago.
Cigarettes with menthol have been invented in 1920's by American Lloyd "Spud" Hughes from Mingo Junction (Ohio) who, as it is told, kept his cigarettes in tin box with menthol crystals as he permanently had cold. Tobacco hasabsorbed menthol aroma and they became easier for smoking.
Hughes understood that he may earn a fortune on this and to 1932 his brand Spud took fifth place among cigarette brands.
Today about one quarter of cigarettes sold in USA contain Menthol. As interrogations show, they are preferred by 30% of smokers among adult population and more than 40% among young people.
In 2009 in USA was adopted law that for the first time has vested Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with right to regulate tobacco products. In particular the agency is now able to stipulate the upper limit of harmful substances' content (and, of course, determine which substances to consider harmful).
Food and Drug Administration
Officers were not long in prohibiting use of flavoring agents (chocolate, vanilla and other) because of which, as it was considered, children and teenagers started to smoke. But in front of menthol FDA has suddenly stopped, in spite of the fact that it is the most popular flavor. Experts have informed that they need to make additional researches. Menthol not only has pleasant scent. It doesn't gives only fresh aroma but also creates coolness, calms down - namely because of this it is used as ingredient for medicines, especially lozenge. This effect appears because menthol is connecting with receptors of sensory cells that transmit pain, temperature and itching signals. That is why menthol contained in cigarettes softens oral cavity, nasal pharynx and respiratory tracts reaction on tobacco smoke and that is why it is easier to inhale combustion products.
Examination of tobacco industry documents for internal use that were in course from 1965 to 2000 has shown that there are two types of menthol cigarettes smokers. First of all, these are those who want to smoke but it is disgusting for them - the youngest, those who just start smoking and those who smoke from time to time. Secondly - menthol lovers who smoke to feel this aroma and experience appropriate physical sensations. In USA, for some reason, second group consists mainly of Afro-American males.
Interrogations and researches have shown that industry hasn't mistaken. Indeed, adolescents in the age from 12 to 17 years smoke cigarettes with menthol more often than older people. The same is fair for 18-24 years old youth.
As menthol cigarettes are popular among adolescents and youth, research advisory committee for tobacco products of Food and Drug Administration concluded that: "Teenagers who smoke cigarettes with menthol are more subject to nicotine influence than teenagers who smoke cigarettes without menthol."
But popularity of cigarettes with menthol among Afro-Americans, in turn, shows that this part of society suffers disproportionately strong.
